How to read the rhythm view
Paste or type a draft. Each bar is one sentence, in the order you wrote them, and a taller bar is a longer sentence. The summary gives the number of sentences, the average length and the longest, in words.
Sentences of more than 30 words rise past the dashed line and carry a mark above. Move along the strip with the left and right arrow keys, or point at a bar, to see which sentence it is and how long it runs.
Using it on a second draft
- Look for long stretches of bars the same height. They usually sound flat when read aloud.
- Check each marked sentence. If it holds more than one idea, split it. If it builds to something, leave it.
- Follow a long sentence with a short one when you want a point to land.

Questions
What does Draft Analysis show?
It splits your draft into sentences and draws one bar per sentence, as tall as the sentence is long. You see the rhythm of your writing at a glance, with the average and longest sentence in words.
What counts as a long sentence?
Any sentence of more than 30 words. Long sentences rise past a dashed line and carry a mark above their bar. A long sentence is not always a mistake, but it is worth a second look.
How does it find where a sentence ends?
It uses your browser's sentence rules, with a few corrections. Abbreviations such as Mr., Dr. and e.g., and initials like J. R. R., do not end a sentence.
Why vary sentence length?
A run of sentences of the same length reads as monotone. Mixing short and long sentences gives writing a pace, with short ones for emphasis and long ones to carry a thought.
Is my draft saved or uploaded?
Your draft is saved in your browser only, so it is still there when you come back, and it is never sent to our servers. Clear your browser's site data to remove it.
